A Guest’s Note: What Helped Me Feel at Home

A guest’s perspective on the small details that can make staying in someone else’s home feel more comfortable.

Subject: The little things that help me settle in

Hi,

Thank you for making space for me. I know sharing a home takes trust and adjustment. What helps me settle in is knowing what to expect and feeling comfortable asking when something is unclear.

Before I arrive, I want to know how to get in, where to put my things, and what routines matter to you. It also helps to understand which groceries are shared and which are yours. A few clear notes mean I don’t have to guess—or worry that asking will make me seem ungrateful.

A welcome with room to ask

I may still have questions when I arrive. Where should I leave my shoes? Is it okay to use the washing machine? I can check the house notes and ask when something isn’t covered, instead of trying to read the room.

That kind of welcome helps me feel like a guest, not a problem to manage. I can respect your routines while still being honest about what I need.

Clear details didn’t make the stay feel formal. They made it easier to relax.

It helps to talk about the shape of the stay too: the dates we have in mind, when we’ll check in, and what kind of help or contribution we’ve agreed on. We can revisit the plan if circumstances change, without wondering whether the arrangement is quietly becoming something else.

What I took with me

Gratitude doesn’t mean pretending everything is obvious. It’s okay for me to ask, and it’s okay for a host to say what works for them. A simple expectations checklist can open the conversation before either person feels awkward bringing it up.

Most of all, I want to be treated like an adult. A host can offer help without making me feel small, and be clear about what they can offer. That gives me a chance to show up thoughtfully, too.

Thank you for the room, the welcome, and the honest conversations. I hope I can offer someone that same kind of clarity when I have a home to share.

With gratitude,
A guest
